Individualized Honors Program (IHP)

The IHP Program

The IHP is a specialized program within the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), initially founded in 1970 and adopted by Mark Twain Middle School in 2020. IHP students are motivated towards academic excellence in all core content areas and achievement through rigorous, accelerated learning far above grade-level standards. • The IHP program was spurred by Local District and Westside parents who wanted to bring a rigorous and highly accelerated academic program to students in West Los Angeles.
  • Mark Twain Middle School is the 2nd school in all of LAUSD to offer this program.
  • The IHP empowers highly gifted students to far exceed academic achievement levels and cultivates a growth mindset, critical thinking, and inquiry-based practices.
  • 2022-23 school year will be limited to one 6th grade class.
  • The 2022-23 school year for the 7th and 8th-grade class will be limited to availability and priority will be given to current MTMS students.
This program recruits a diverse group of students that cultivates a growth mindset, in-depth and reflective inquiry-based practices, and consistent participation in outreach, integration, and service to their school and extended communities. IHP students are essentially self-starters, curious about learning, and can apply learned skills across various disciplines. Therefore, IHP students are prepared, not only academically but socially and emotionally. Students chosen to participate in IHP must complete a thorough and holistic application process; this includes a review of past grades, standardized test scores, academic assessment, interview, and teacher recommendations, which are all reviewed and facilitated by our on-site IHP Team. The IHP intends for students to be confident and well prepared to enter Advanced Placement classes and honors classes in high school and be positive contributors to their school communities.

IHP candidates have often expressed that they want a challenge in all learning areas. They have a curiosity beyond the textbook, and often will go beyond and research topics to extend their learning. Given this curiosity and dedication, it is no surprise that IHP students have been making a splash at Mark Twain competitions! In the past two years, our 6th and 7th-grade IHP students have been awarded and acknowledged in the Science Olympiad and Robotics Competitions. Our 6th-grade IHP students competed in the school-wide and regional Spelling BEE. As part of being well-rounded, IHP students are also athletes and are recognized as accomplished in cross country, track, volleyball, and soccer.

Part of our IHP mission is that our students give back to Mark Twain and their larger communities. When our students give back, they create a positive social and emotional space for themselves and others. They often apply their academic knowledge to their service, making the experience even richer for all participants. All IHP 7th and 6th graders have an IHP student mentor, and all 8th graders are mentors. Mentorship builds cross-grade level relationships and creates a space where IHP students can work together throughout their educational careers.

All IHP students are also given a mandatory reading list and assignment for the summer. This reading means to spur topic interest and build reading endurance, critical thinking, and most importantly, the general love for reading.

We have an active and caring parent group as part of our IHP Family. Parents have been an integral part of building the program. They have arranged non-LAUSD events where IHP students can meet and have fun together, including community service projects and events and overnight trips.

It is exciting to have all three grade levels in IHP for the first time in the 2022-2023 school year! We look forward to refining our program and finding new and innovative ways for IHP students to gain positive experiences and learn!
