English Learners Advisory Committee

As a school with more than 20 students identified as English Learners (ELs), regardless of language, ELAC is an advisory committee that advises school staff on the English Language Development programs and services to EL students.

The function of ELAC is to also:

  • participate in the development of the school plan
  • collaborate with the school's bilingual coordinator on Master Plan implementation, school needs assessment, language census, parent involvement, and staff development 
  • assist with efforts to make parents aware of the importance of regular school attendance.

Requirements:

  • parent members must be parents of EL students.
  • write own bylaws establishing term of membership, membership number on committee, and annual election of officers 
  • minimum of 8 meetings held each school year 
  • training provided for members 
  • principal is a non-voting participant and responsible for proper function and implementation of ELAC.

Orientation and Election:

  • held annually before the end of the second week of October
  • conducted by a Parent Community Facilitator from the Local District 3 office 
  • members are elected by their respective groups (parents/community, students, teachers, other school personnel) 
  • officers are elected by ELAC members 
  • a Representative and Alternate are elected to Local District 3 ELAC.
